A key priority for African countries is to build networks that provide a consistent as well as reliable power supply, in addition to rising installed power generation capability. Renewables have risen as a key option for meeting Africa’s ongoing electricity deficit, with nearly 350 GW of hydroelectric capacity, 110 GW of wind, 1,000 GW of solar, and 15 GW of geothermal across the continent. For instance, South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Program, an interconnected strategy that fast-tracks green energy production to offer a long-term as well as sustainable electricity supply, aims to significantly expand its renewable energy presence in the sector.
