Renewable Power Variability Can Be Solved with Energy Storage

Battery storage systems are evolving as one of the main solutions for efficiently incorporating high shares of wind and solar power into global energy systems, as per the International Renewable Energy Agency. A key priority for African countries is to build networks that provide a consistent as well as reliable power supply, in addition to rising installed power generation capability.  As a result, energy storage will help sustain reliable electricity grids by supplementing generation capacity, fostering a continent-wide energy transformation, and spurring development in the renewable field and elsewhere.

Energy storage advancements are a critical component of green energy supply security. Renewables have risen as a key option for meeting Africa’s ongoing electricity deficit, with nearly 350 GW of hydroelectric capacity, 110 GW of wind, 1,000 GW of solar, and 15 GW of geothermal across the continent. Even so, one of the most significant problems in renewable energy production is supply stability, as natural occurrences like drought or a shortage of wind have been known to interrupt supply. As a result, the use of energy storage technology opens up the possibility of collecting and storing power that can then be released as required to meet demand. During times of high demand or even when green energy is scarce, energy storage ensures a steady supply of clean energy.

Furthermore, energy storage improves power access for the majority of Africa’s people, who live in rural areas with restricted connections to national grids. The advancement of these power storage technologies will allow for the storage of large quantities of electricity both on as well as off the grid, resulting in more efficient power storage and deployment. Energy storage systems improve renewable production and distribution throughout the continent while also providing protection for those who are farther away from the transmission grid and much more vulnerable to outages.

Renewable energy growth has exploded across the continent as international pressure mounts to minimize carbon emissions from conventional fossil fuel production. For instance, South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Program, an interconnected strategy that fast-tracks green energy production to offer a long-term as well as sustainable electricity supply, aims to significantly expand its renewable energy presence in the sector. By providing a more stable and efficient grid system, the energy storage technologies will aid in the transition to renewable energy. Energy storage will increase efficiencies and capacities while promoting a diverse renewable energy mix by integrating resilience into the national grid.
